TEXAS – On Wednesday, Sept. 29, a delegation from the Trust Respect Access (TRA) coalition, the largest coalition of reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations in Texas, which includes Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, will travel to Washington DC to advocate for federal intervention to protect abortion rights.
On September 1st, Texas’s six-week abortion ban (SB 8) went into effect. The law bans abortion at around six weeks gestation — before many people even know they are pregnant — and it allows any person, from any state, to sue anyone in Texas who provides assistance to someone seeking abortion, and reap a cash reward.
SB 8 is the most extreme abortion ban in the nation, and if the courts allow it to stand, the law will continue to spread like wildfire to states across the country. Congress must take immediate action to enshrine abortion rights into law. It’s time for lawmakers to a take critical steps toward protecting access to safe, legal abortion across our nation by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act of 2021 (EACH), the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act, and abolishing the racist Hyde Amendment.
We know that attacks on abortion access disproportionately harm Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, the LGBTQ+ community, young people, those living in rural communities, people with disabilities, and people with low incomes. Together, members of the Trust Respect Access coalition will direct the national spotlight to Texas’s six-week ban and call on Congress to intervene while uplifting the voices of those most impacted by extreme anti-abortion laws.
