RICHMOND, VIRGINIA [02/07/19]—The following statement is being released by the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition: NLIRH Virginia Latina Advocacy Network, Progress Virginia, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, and Whole Woman’s Health Alliance.
“We trust women. We believe survivors. We believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson. The harrowing experience she describes is both cruel and disgusting, and the story she shared must be met with support. Choosing to come forward and share an experience of assault can be deeply re-traumatizing. We know that every experience is unique, and there’s no expiration date to tell one’s story. We do not accept or tolerate sexual violence by anyone, full stop.
Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Dr. Tyson has stated she does not wish to speak further on this matter, and we respect her decision. When survivors speak, we will listen. We strongly condemn Lt. Governor Fairfax and believe leaders and advocates across Virginia should join us in publicly speaking out to hold him to account.”
